Apple's iPhone 3.0 Software Summary

If you have not heard, Apple had a press event announcing the v3 software kit for iPhone, iPod Touch. They really addressed most of the perceived shortcomings of the current software. Getting this will be like getting a whole new device.

Here is a quick list of key details:

  • Opening-up accessory access to dock connector and Bluetooth. (bluetooth keyboard is sure bet in future)
  • Will allow Core Location for turn-by-turn directions (we will get good navigation apps)
  • Push notifications for 3rd party apps (like Mail and Text have now)
  • COPY PASTE (between all apps and undo by shaking)
  • Landscape mode and keyboard in all native apple apps!
  • MMS! (photos via texting)
  • Native voice memo app, editable and sharable
  • Much improved Calendar functionality
  • Bulit-in Search in apps, contacts, iPod
  • Stereo Bluetooth!
  • Will allow subscriptions for app store (for game extras, magazine subscriptions, eBooks)
  • In hands of developers today

No Flash support or video functionality mentioned, but we can keep our fingers crossed that they will be features in next gen iPhone hardware.

This is really cool news, thanks for the update.

Will there be a charge for this software upgrade or is it free to iPhone users. I think the last one was free for iPhone and a cost for iTouch

Update should be free for iPhone. $10 for Touch. Same as before.
